Afternoon Keynote

THE MEDIAVORE’S DILEMMA: MAKING SUSTAINABLE MEDIA SUPPLY CHAIN CHOICES

Don Carli, President,
Nima Hunter, Inc., and Senior Research Fellow with nonprofit Institute for Sustainable Communication (ISC)

Can advertisers and purchasing professionals afford to ignore the environmental and social risks, costs and opportunities associated with their media supply chain choices?

Just as we must increasingly give thought to how we grow, process and distribute
the food that feeds our families, we must also step up our efforts to identify, quantify and disclose the flows of energy, materials and waste associated with the print and digital media products that businesses and governments employ to inform and entertain society. Uninformed media supply chain choices carry brand and regulatory risks for advertisers and media companies. Uninformed consumer media choices also carry risks that may constrain or curtail our abilities to communicate and result in unintended consequences for an increasingly interconnected world.

This thought-provoking keynote will explore the importance of environmental lifecycle thinking and discuss how responsible media supply chain decisions can increase the possibilities for vibrant economies, sustainable ecologies and improved quality of life today and for generations to come.

Don’s Bio

Don Carli is President of Nima Hunter Inc., a strategic planning, marketing research, business intelligence and sustainable sourcing consultancy that he founded in 1986. He is also an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Industry Studies Program Affiliate Scholar, Sustainability Editor of Aktuel Grafisk Information Magazine in Sweden and Environmental Correspondent for PBS “MediaShift.” Don has been extensively quoted on issues related to sustainability, advertising, media and green marketing in The New York Times, Fortune Magazine, AdAge Magazine and on American Public Media and NPR radio’s “Morning Edition.”

A graduate of St. Lawrence University, Don is a member of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), a member of the board of advisors of the AIGA Center for Sustainable Design, a member of the ISO TC130 Work Group for Carbon Footprinting of Print Media, a member of the Institute for Supply Management, a recipient of the P3 Foundation “Luminaire Award” recognizing outstanding achievement and dedication by graphic communication industry innovators, as well as a nominee for a 2011 “Mirror Award” for digital media journalism in the public interest from the SI Newhouse School of Journalism at Syracuse University.

Session 5

Innovations in Digital & Variable Data Printing

Cheryl Kahanec, EVP,
EarthDigital

During this session, Cheryl Kahanec will share her experience in the digital printing world. She will provide a quick glimpse at the past, present and future of the manufacturing evolution. Technology changes have had significant impact on the print products available, and Cheryl will speak about what these innovations mean to you as a print buyer. She will discuss when it makes sense to incorporate variable data printing into your campaign and if it might make sense to utilize an offset-digital hybrid model to keep costs in line.

Non-print communications are also having a significant impact on print buying.  Integrated marketing campaigns are growing in popularity, and the print buyer’s role in their execution is an integral component to their success.

This session will end with a look at the future and what may or may not be available to the marketplace. The print industry’s Drupa 2012 is only months away, and Cheryl will share her personal predictions and her wish list of what changes are coming – plus how they will affect you.
